The confirmed combat loop
Game Freak’s description gives a clear four-step model:
- Emma fights with real-time sword actions.
- A successful parry, described as a just guard, earns points.
- Those points activate Koo’s skills.
- Opening Koo’s command menu slows time while you choose a technique.
This matters because the parry is not only damage prevention. It feeds the tactical half of the system.
How to practice without guessing
Choose a repeatable enemy attack and watch for a consistent wind-up. Guard late enough to test the just-guard window, then verify the resource result. If the expected points do not appear, treat the attempt as an ordinary block rather than declaring the visual effect a parry.
Do not use a community-posted frame count as universal truth unless it names the platform, mode, game version, input method, and capture method. None of the official sources reviewed here publishes a numerical frame window.
When to spend Koo’s points
The slowdown exists to create a decision window. Before selecting a command, ask:
- Is this for damage, control, safety, or setup?
- Will spending now prevent a more useful response in the next attack cycle?
- Is the target still in a state where the chosen technique can connect?
That decision-first approach follows the intended action-plus-command rhythm without inventing a universal combo.
What the evidence does not prove
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Parries generate points for Koo | Officially confirmed |
| The command menu slows time | Officially confirmed |
| Triangle opens the menu on PS5 | Officially confirmed by Game Freak |
| One exact timing window applies to every difficulty | Not established |
| A named community combo is always optimal | Not established |
If parrying is not working for you
First confirm you are attempting the timing on an attack that can be guarded. Then reduce other variables: use one enemy, avoid camera clutter, and spend a few attempts observing rather than attacking. If timing remains the blocker, use the game’s difficulty options and a build that leans less heavily on close-range just guards while you learn.
