Getting Started / use Koo's command abilities

Koo Commands and Abilities

Quick answer

Koo's abilities are command skills fueled by points Emma earns through successful parries. Open the command menu when you need a tactical pause: official material says it can be accessed at any time and slows the action while you choose. On PS5, Game Freak identifies Triangle as the command-menu input; use the binding shown in your own platform's control settings elsewhere. Treat Koo's meter as a decision resource rather than a cooldown bar—build it through just guards, then spend on the technique that addresses the current enemy state, range, or pressure.

What Koo does in the combat system

Koo is the command-based half of the “one-person, one-dog action RPG.” Emma’s swordplay runs in real time; Koo unleashes techniques chosen through a menu. The interface slows the fight rather than fully replacing it with a turn-based phase.

How the point economy works

Successful just guards award points, and Koo’s skills consume those points. That creates a practical sequence:

  • read an attack;
  • earn points with a parry;
  • open the command menu;
  • choose a technique for the current state;
  • return to Emma’s real-time actions.

The official descriptions do not establish that points should always be spent immediately. Saving for an answer to a dangerous state is a reasonable tactical choice, but the exact best threshold depends on the ability and encounter.

A simple command decision model

SituationQuestion to ask before selecting
Enemy is pressuring EmmaWhich command creates safety or interrupts pressure?
Enemy is exposedWhich available technique converts the opening into damage?
Target moved out of rangeIs the command still likely to connect?
Meter is nearly emptyIs this use more valuable than keeping an emergency option?

Platform controls

Game Freak explicitly names the Triangle button in the PlayStation version. We do not translate that into assumed Xbox or PC bindings because mappings can differ and may be changed by the player. Use the prompt displayed by your build or the in-game control menu.

What to verify after an update

Recheck ability costs, descriptions, target behavior, and any skill-tree modifiers after a patch. A changed value can make a previously sound command sequence stale even when the underlying parry-to-points loop remains intact.
